BOX SCORE
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Logan Pierce had three doubles and Tyler Ray returned to form as Troy hammered Western Kentucky 13-3 in the Sun Belt Conference series opener Friday night at Nick Denes Field Friday night.
The Trojans belted out seven extra-base hits in the game with five doubles, a triple and a Danny Collins home run. Jo-El Bennett drove in a career-high three runs on a pair of doubles, while Clay Holcomb was 2-for-5 including his first triple of the season. Troy had four sacrifice flies in the ball game – two shy of the NCAA record – and stole three bases.
Troy has now scored 39 runs over its past four Sun Belt Conference games. The Trojans have won seven straight over the Hilltoppers and five in a row in Bowling Green.
Ray (3-4) went the distance for the Trojans to pick up his first win since the second weekend of the season when he dominated Southern Miss. Ray struck out six, scattered 10 hits and walked a pair to pick up his 30th career victory.
Collins led off the fourth with his eighth home run of the season after Troy tied the game in the third on one of two errors in the game by WKU. Boone Shear then drew one of his two walks in the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Vaughn. Bennett followed with a double off the wall in left-center to score Shear and he scored one batter later on Holcomb's triple. After Brandon Brown walked, Holcomb stole home on a perfectly executed double steal which gave Troy a 5-1 lead.
The Trojans (17-20, 6-10 Sun Belt) kept the pressure on in the next frame with a pair of sac flies from Bennett and Collins. After WKU (15-23, 6-10) pushed a run across in the fifth, Troy scored eight of the game's final nine runs.
Tyler Hannah had a sac fly in the sixth to score Brown after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Brown had just one official at-bat in the game after he drew a pair of walks, was hit by the pitch and had a sac fly in the seventh.
A five-run seventh inning put the game on ice for the Trojans as all nine batters had an at-bat in the frame. Shear and Vaughn led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Bennett drove home Shear with his second double of the game and then Brown delivered his sac fly after Holcomb beat out an infield single to load the bases. Jakob Nixon followed with a single back up the middle and Pierce drove home a run with his third double of the game; Troy's final run scored on a throwing error on Pierce's double.
Justin Hageman (2-5) took the loss for Western Kentucky after he allowed seven runs – six earned – on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. Hageman walked six and struck out just one before passing the ball off to the bullpen.
The teams will play game two of the series Saturday at 4 p.m.
