First pitch is schedule for 5 p.m. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (all times are Central). All three games will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with local coverage on 94.7 FM and worldwide coverage on TroyTrojans.com or via the Tune-In Radio app on your smartphone by searching for WTBF-FM.
Troy (4-3) is coming off a 13-6 victory over Samford on Tuesday night. Led by three hits from Boone Shear and Danny Collins, the Trojans battered the Bulldog pitching staff for 12 hits. Shear drove in a career-best six runs in the game and enters the weekend leading the Sun Belt Conference with 14 RBIs on the season; he drove in 18 all of last year.
The Trojans continued to frustrate opposing pitching with great vision at the plate. Troy batters drew six walks and were hit by three pitches in the game; on the season the Trojans are averaging six walks and 1.3 hit batters per game at the plate, while Trojan pitching is only allowing three walks a game.
Tyler Ray (2-0, 0.69) will make his 49th career start for Troy on Friday night. The senior All-American leads all active pitchers in the NCAA with 29 career victories and has won 18 of his last 19 decisions. The Wildcats will counter with junior right-hander Gabriel Hernandez (1-1, 6.00). The game would have featured the nation's two longest active win streaks; however Hernandez saw his streak of 12 straight victories come to an end against No. 1 Florida earlier this season. Ray has won an NCAA best 14 straight decisions.
Saturday will matchup a pair of sophomores as the Trojans will send southpaw Jimmy Hodgskin (0-1, 4.76) to the bump, while the Wildcats are scheduled to start right-hander Montana Durapau (0-1, 2.19). Hodgskin held Southern Miss to one earned run on four hits over seven innings last week. Durapau started the series opener at South Florida last week and allowed six runs – three earned – over five innings. Both teams will announce their Sunday starters later in the weekend.
Collins leads the Trojans at the plate batting at a .400 clip with three doubles, a home run and three RBIs. Logan Pierce is tied with Tyler Hannah for the Sun Belt lead with nine walks and is second on the club with a .318 batting average. Hannah has also been hit by four pitches this season and is second in the Sun Belt with a .576 on-base percentage.
The Trojan bullpen has been solid through the first seven games led by Nate Hill, Tyson Workman and Thomas Austin. Hill has struck out 12 and allowed just two hits over seven innings of relief work and has a save, a win and two holds, while Workman has a pair of saves and eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings, and Austin has two holds and seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings. As a unit, the Troy bullpen has registered 41 strikeouts and issued just seven walks over 31 innings.
Bethune-Cookman won its first two series of the season at Florida Gulf Coast and South Florida, but has dropped mid-week contests to Florida, Stetson and Central Florida. The Wildcats are batting .324 as a team with three starters hitting at a .300 clip or better led by Brashad Johnson's .324 average.
TROY, Ala. – The Troy baseball team hits the road for a three-game series against an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago for the second straight weekend. After playing three games at Southern Miss last weekend, the Trojans travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for a non-conference series against Bethune-Cookman this weekend.
