LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – In the earliest conference opener in school history, the Troy women's basketball team fell at UALR, 75-52, on Thursday at the Jack Stephens Center.
A cold start is really what cost Troy (1-4, 0-1) as the Trojans opened the game 0-of-14 from the floor and trailed 23-7 when Britney McCloud's jumper at the 10:34 mark gave Troy its first field goal of the night.
Joanna Harden led the Trojans with 14 points on the night while Ashley Beverly-Kelley was also in double figures with 11 points. Troy finished the game shooting 22.6 percent (14-of-62) from the field and 20 percent (3-of-15) from deep.
UALR (5-1, 1-0) was led by Janette Merriex who scored 14 despite shooting just 2-of-11 from deep. Three other UALR players were in double figures, but not among them was Taylor Gault, the Sun Belt's leading scorer coming in at 21.2 points per game.
Troy held the reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year to just nine points on the nights, including just three in the second half.
Ka'Nesheia Cobbins was 5-of-5 in the game for UALR with 10 points, all in the first half as UALR built a 37-22 halftime lead. Troy did a good defensively, holding UALR to 14 points over the final 10 minutes of the frame, but continued to struggle from the field, trailing by 15 at the break.
Troy was outrebounded in the contest, 60-44, as the Trojans could only get within 12 in the second half.
Troy returns to the floor on Saturday as the Trojans host WKU at Trojan Arena at 5:15 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader as the Troy men's basketball team hosts WKU at 7:30 p.m. Both games will air on ESPN3.
