TROY, Ala. – The Trojans (4-2) knocked off Alabama State (0-5), 66-62, on Sunday night at Trojan Arena. Emil Jones led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds, as Troy picked up its fourth win of the season.
“We didn't play great, but we got the win,” said head coach Don Maestri. “Emil (Jones) really sparked us tonight.”
The Trojans got up by eight with a 13-4 run early in the second half, taking a 45-37 lead. From there, Troy continued to work the ball, as 10 different players scoring on the night, led by Jones' season-high 18. Jones continued to fill out the stat sheet, finishing the game with team-highs in rebounds (eight), assists (five) and steals (two).
Antoine Myers and Hunter Williams also finished in double-figures, with each scoring 10 points. Myers also had two assists and five boards.
The win marks the fastest that the Trojans have made it to four wins since the 2006-07 season, when it also took six games and happened on November 25.
The Trojans shot 42.9 percent from the field (27-of-63) and a season-high 42.9 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-14). The Hornets were 24-of-53 from the field (45.3 %) but just 4-of-16 (25.0 %) from range. Troy outrebounded Alabama State, 36-33.
Justin Wright made his first appearance of the season, checking in late in the first half and finishing the game with three points and three assists in 15 minutes.
Troy hit a long scoreless drought late in the first half, going 6:27 without scoring a bucket. The Hornets built a six point lead over that stretch, but the Trojans closed the half with a 9-4 run, capped off by a half-court buzzer-beater by Williams, to head into the locker rooms down 31-30.
The Trojans are back in action on Tuesday, when they host UAB at 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
