Trojans Complete Season Sweep of South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team knocked off South Alabama for the second time in nine days, defeating the Jaguars, 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21), on the road Saturday night. The loss was just the second of the season at Jaguar Gym for South Alabama.
Troy (18-9, 8-3) remains in second place in the Sun Belt (overall and East Division) standings, sitting a game and a half over UALR and Arkansas State, who each sit at 6-4 a top the West Division.
Troy was led offensively for the second straight match by Alicia Dukes who posted a match-high 17 kills. Blair Winston, who missed Troy's match at Florida A&M on Tuesday, return to post 16 kills while Breanna Cullity recorded 12 kills and a .350 attack percentage.
Alexandra Alexander entered Saturday leading the Sun Belt with 11.42 assists per set in conference play and extended that lead with 50 assists on the night, her second straight 50-assist effort.
Courtney Cohen recorded a match-high 19 digs while Dukes and Alexander each posted 11 digs for double-doubles. Kelley Curran was also in double figures with 12 digs.
South Alabama (13-13, 6-5) was led by Melissa Waelter with 14 kills, although she also recorded a match-high 12 errors. The Jaguars now sit third in the Sun Belt East Division and tied for fifth in the league overall.
Troy was hot out of the gates on the road as the Trojans hit .342 in the opening frame with 18 kills, however, South Alabama fought back late to make it a tight set. With Troy leading 21-15, the Jaguars scored five of six to pull within two at 22-20, but Troy went on to win, 25-23.
The Trojans hit just .077 in the second set with 10 errors as South Alabama evened the match at a set a piece, winning the second set, 25-19.
Troy used a comeback in the third set to take control of the match as South Alabama seemed poised to take a 2-1 lead as they led the set late, 23-20. However, an attack error and a Troy block sparked a five-point run that gave Troy a 25-23 lead.
The momentum led Troy to a 21-13 lead in the fourth set, but South Alabama cut it to three at 23-20 before Troy went on to win 25-21, taking the match 3-1.
The Trojans return to the floor on Friday when they return to Sartain Hall and host Sun Belt leader, No.19 WKU. Troy will then host Middle Tennessee on Saturday, senior night.
