Troy Volleyball Moves to 6-2 in Sun Belt with Win Over ULM

TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team picked up its third straight win overall and its fifth straight at home on Saturday as the Trojans defeated ULM, 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-23).
Troy (15-8, 6-2) continues the best start to Sun Belt play in school history and remains in second place in the East Division. The Trojans held ULM to a .160 attack percentage, including a match-low .073 in the fourth and clinching set.
Blair Winston and Kayla Pickart led the Trojans with 16 kills apiece while Devin Von Pingel posted 12 kills and just two errors for a match-high .385 attack percentage. Alexandra Alexander posted 51 assists for the Trojans who hit .218 as a team.
Courtney Cohen posted 20 digs to lead the Trojans while Mailande Parker, Alexander and Ali Dowdall all had 12 each.
ULM (4-13, 0-8) was led by Bianca Ocana who posted 15 kills while Marcela Araya posted a match-high 21 digs.
The Trojans outhit the Warhawks in the first set, but ULM used a run midway through the frame to erase a Troy 16-9 lead. ULM eventually pulled even at 20-20 and again at 21-21, but the Warhawks got ahead at 24-21 before taking the opening set 25-23.
Troy pulled away early in the second set, turning a 6-6 contest into a 12-6 Troy leads, but again ULM fought back. This time the Warhawks tied the set at 16-16. The two sides battled to a 24-24 tie before a Winston kill put Troy up 25-24 and a ULM attack error gave Troy the 26-24 win in the second set.
Troy dominated the third set, hitting .457 with 20 kills and just four errors. The Trojans built a 10-4 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-15 to take a 2-1 lead.
Troy had to erase a fourth-set deficit in a frame that saw 14 ties. Troy trailed 6-2 and eventually pulled even at 10-10. Troy held the Warhawks to a .073 attack percentage in the frame as the two sides battled back-and-forth.
With the score tied at 23-23, the Trojans benefited from a ULM attack error to take the lead before Von Pingel's kill clinched the set, 25-23, and the match 3-1.
The Trojans return to the court on Thursday when they host in-state rival South Alabama at 7 p.m. at Sartain Hall.
