Coming off a huge series win over Southern Miss, the Troy Trojans baseball team will head to Birmingham today for the first road game of the year. The Trojans and Samford Bulldogs will square off at Joe Lee Griffin Field with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
Troy is off to a great start with a 6-1 record. It has been solid pitching and defense that has fueled the Trojans so far, but the game with Samford will be the first on natural grass.
“We have played outstanding defense so far, but this will be the first time we have played on grass,” Trojans coach Bobby Pierce said. “We may go out and make six errors, but I do not expect that to be the case.”
Samford is 5-0 at home this year, but was swept in a four-game series at Jacksonville last weekend. The Bulldogs have hit and pitched well, but have struggled defensively. Samford has been charged with 20 errors already in just nine games.
“It always seems like the games with Samford are very offensive in nature, but with the new bats this year I am not sure of what to expect,” Pierce said. “Hopefully we will continue to build on the momentum we gained over the weekend and will go up there and play well.”
The Trojans will send freshman left-hander Jimmy Hodgskin (0-0, 6.75) to the mound for the game. Hodgskin allowed three first inning runs to High Point in his first start of the year, but then shut the Panthers down for his last three innings of work.
The Bulldogs will counter with junior right-hander Charles Basford (1-0, 0.00), who will be making his second start as well. The Tallahassee, Fla., native pitched just one inning in a start against Alabama A&M, striking out all three hitters he faced. He picked up a save against Western Illinois during the opening weekend of the season with three scoreless innings of relief.
Troy senior shortstop Adam Bryant carries an 11-game hit streak into tonight's game. Bryant has a history of success against the Bulldogs, having hit .391 against them in his career with four homers and 12 RBI in six games.
The Trojans will return home to Riddle-Pace Field this weekend for a three-game series against Southeast Missouri State. Friday's series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
