TROY, Ala. – For the second time in two weeks, the Troy University women and the University of South Alabama will do battle on the hardwood. However, this time, the game will take place in Mobile at the Mitchell Center with tip set for 7:05 pm Wednesday night.
Troy (5-18, 2-8 Sun Belt) met at Sartain Hall on January 25 on a historic night for the Trojans women's basketball program. On that night, senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) scored her 1,000th career point in leading the Trojans to a 66-41 victory over their in-state rival. Also on that night, the Trojans held South Alabama to the lowest first half point total in school history (11), and also held the Lady Jags well below their scoring average and shooting percentage.
Since then, the Trojans have lost back-to-back games, falling to ULM on the road and to FIU at home this past week. Troy has been off for a week, a week needed for the nine players that are dressing for the Trojans due to injuries to get their legs back under them.
During that time, South Alabama (13-10, 5-6 Sun Belt) has dropped back-to-back games to WKU and Middle Tennessee on the road. The Lady Jags are led in scoring by Christian Shelter at 11.9 points per game, while Taylor Ammons leads South Alabama on the boards at 8.1 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, McNair leads Troy in scoring and rebounding at 14.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game as the senior has just six regular season games remaining in her career. She is joined in double figures by junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) at 13.4 points per game.
Troy enjoys a slim margin in the all-time series, as they lead 16-15 overall after their win at Sartain Hall. However, playing in Mobile is a different story, as the Trojans are 6-9 all-time in the city of Mobile, including being winless at the Mitchell Center. The last win for Troy against South Alabama in Mobile came courtesy of an 86-62 victory back on December 21, 1997.
The game can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM beginning at 6:45 pm with the pregame show courtside at the Mitchell Center, followed by the tip at 7:05 pm.
