TROY, Ala. – With just two home games remaining for the 2010-11 season, the Troy University women's basketball team hits the floor Thursday night to take on Middle Tennessee State University as part of the WBCA Pink Zone Initiative.
Troy (5-20, 2-10 Sun Belt) will take part in the WBCA Pink Zone Initiative by asking everyone in attendance to wear pink. Donations will be accepted at the door and wristbands will be sold in the lobby, with all proceeds going to help find a cure and fund research for breast cancer.
The event is also being held in conjunction with NCAA Pack the House, a competition set up by the NCAA to pack as many gyms around the country for women's basketball as possible. The best marketed and attended games will be recognized by the NCAA at the end of the season.
The Trojans and Middle Tennessee (21-5, 12-1 Sun Belt) met in January in Murfreesboro, with the Blue Raiders coming away with the 103-52 victory at the Murphy Center. In that contest, Tenia Manuel (Leesburg, Fla./Leesburg HS) led the Trojans with 17 points; while Jamesha Blake (Atlanta, Ga./SW DeKalb HS) tied her career-high with 10 points. Meanwhile for Middle Tennessee, Icelyn Elie paced five players in double figures with 18 points.
Tonight's game will feature a pair of individuals who scored their 1,000th career point earlier this season. Anne Marie Lanning achieved the feat for Middle Tennessee in January, while Troy senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) achieved the feat earlier this month for the Trojans.
The Trojans are led by McNair in scoring at 14.0 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game. She is currently fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in rebounding this season, and is the school's all-time career leader in rebounding at the Division I level. She is just one of 22 active players in the NCAA to have scored 1,000 points, grabbed 700 rebounds and recorded 100 steals. Junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) is the only other player in double figures for the Trojans, averaging 13.2 points per game.
The game can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM beginning at 5 pm with the pregame show courtside at Sartain Hall, followed by the tip at 5:15 pm. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's program Thursday night.
