Troy Set to Kickoff Conference Action

Troy, Ala. – After wrapping up their non-conference play against Kennesaw State last week, the Trojan (1-10, 0-0) women's basketball team now turns their focus to their second phase of the season when they kick off their conference season against Denver (8-5, 0-0) on Wednesday.

“There are three parts to a season: non-conference, conference and post season,” said head coach Michael Murphy. “We are now focusing on our second part of the season, the conference part and that is something we have to be prepared for and we will be.”

The Trojans will have their work cut out as Denver currently leads Sun Belt conference west division in first place. Troy is currently holding on to fifth place in the east division as they sit one spot better than FIU who is currently slated last in the east.

Troy has struggled historically against the Pioneers as Denver leads the overall series record at 7-1. However the Trojans are 1-1 on Denver's court. The only Trojan victory over the Pioneers came inside the Magness Arena on January 28, 2006.

Troy will look to DeAngela Sword to continue her success this season. Sword has recorded double digit scoring in 10 of the last 11 games this season including a season high of 21 points in her performance in the victory against in-state rival Alabama State.

The Trojans will have to find a way to stop Denver's Kaetlyn Murdoch who leads her team in scoring averaging 17.9 points a game. Murdoch was named as Sun Belt player of the week last week with her performances in a tournament at Hawai'i.

Both teams enter conference action in the midst of losing streaks. Denver enters Thursday's contest off of a three game losing streak while Troy enters off of a two game losing streak.

The Trojans are set to tipoff against the Pioneers in Denver at 8pm Wednesday.
