Macon, Ga. – The Troy women's basketball took Mercer University to overtime before falling to the Bears 69-59 Sunday in Macon, Georgia.
Both teams came out evenly matched in the first half as there were seven different lead changes in the first half alone. Ieva Nagy totaled 10 points in just the first half, including a three point shot as time expired sending Troy into halftime down only 28-30.
The second half was just as competitive as the first with six more lead changes. DeAngela Sword was 4-4 at the free throw line to account for two of the second half lead changes.
Brooke Bowie hit a quick layup to tie the game at 55. Mercer was unable to answer the points to send the contest into overtime.
The Bears gained a quick 10 point lead in overtime, the biggest lead of the game that the Trojans were unable to overcome. The Bears claimed final victory over the Trojans at 69-59.
“I thought we really did a good job in the second half of taking care of the game and taking care of the ball and managing the game,” said head coach Michael Murphy. “Because of that we gave ourselves a chance in the second half. I thought we ran out of gas in overtime and didn't cover their shooters as well as we needed to. We were there and covering them but we gave them too much of a cushion to make the shot.”
The Trojans would end the game with three players in double-digits for the second contest in a row. Ieva Nagy and DeAngela Sword both totaled 12 points against the Bears as Jasmine Pitts recorded 10.
“Overall we played hard and had really good balance on offense,” said Murphy. “We had a chance to win it at the end of regulation. but it just wasn't to be. The girls are disappointed but we'll come back tomorrow ready to back to work and prepare for Kennesaw State. We're really making progress. Our best basketball is ahead of us we just have to maintain our focus and jeep our eye on the prize. We can't look back or look forward; we have to focus on today.”
The Trojans now look to prepare for Kennesaw State when they host the Owls on Wednesday in Sartain Hall. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm.
