Troy Heads South for Tournament

TROY, Ala. - The Troy University volleyball team will head south to Jacksonville, Florida this weekend to participate in the Best Western Inivitational, hosted by the University of North Florida.

This tournament is the third that Troy has competed in this season, and features Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, University of Illinois-Chicago, North Florida and Troy.

The tournament will mark the start of a nine-game road streak the Trojans will have before returning home on the 28th to face Georgia Southern.

"This weekend we we playing against teams we have not played very much, including a team we have never played in Illinois-Chicago," head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "Playing in tournaments gets us away from a little bit and gets us ready for conference travel since we have a conference that is spread out. It is good for us to see teams we don't typically see and be able to see where we stand right now."

Troy will play Charleston Southern at 3 p.m. and North Florida at 7 p.m. on Friday. They will open play of the tournament Saturday by competing with Chattanooga at 9 a.m. and round out the tournament with Illinois-Chicago at 3 p.m. The game against North Florida can be viewed by clicking the link above.

"We have done some good things in the early portion of the schedule," Kirkpatrick said. We have found ourselves injured and sick in some instances this season, and just when we think we are getting back healthy we lost a player for the year due to injury. It is one of those things you never know about, and one of those things you can't control. We have a very cohesive team, and as a coach you can't ask much more of a team than what they are giving."
