MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After pounding out 16 hits in the early morning hours of Thursday against Middle Tennessee, the Troy bats were shutdown by Arkansas State's Jacob Lee on Thursday night as the Red Wolves sent the Trojans to the losers' bracket of the Sun Belt Tournament with a 12-2 win.
The Trojans (33-24) will face Middle Tennessee on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in an elimination game. Arkansas State (30-26) will await the winner at 7:30 p.m. with a berth in the Sun Belt title game at stake.
Lee (8-4) went the distance in an eight-inning run-rule game, scattering seven hits without allowing a walk. He struck out seven in posting his second complete game of the year. Six of Troy's seven hits in the game came with two out in an inning.
Only Ryan Ditthardt's fourth inning homer and Chase Whitley's eighth inning double produced runs.
Troy's pitching staff, which included Whitley, did not fare nearly as well. The Red Wolves clubbed 10 hits off Trojans starter Tyler Ray (8-4), scoring four times. ASU blew the game open in the eighth inning, scoring eight runs off the trio of Robby Loew, Whitley and Tim Wheeler.
Whitley was roughed up the most, allowing five runs in just 1/3 of an inning. It was the first time in his 29 pitching appearances this year that he was unable to finish a game he was called to pitch in.
The Red Wolves took an early lead with a solo homer by Jordan Castaldo in the second. After Troy tied the game on Ditthardt's 17th homer of the year, ASU plated three runs in the sixth to chase Ray. Singles by Castaldo, Murray Watts and Michael Faulkner plated the runs.
ASU scored eight times in the eighth on six hits, all singles, three walks and a hit batter.
Whitley and Chad Watson had two hits each to lead Troy. Ditthardt extended his hit streak to 12 games while Adam Bryant saw his come to an end at 15 games.
Faulker led the Red Wolves' 17-hit attack with four. Castaldo and Kyle DeGrace had three hits each.
