Freshman Cody Bahrke was named the Male Field Athlete of the Week for his performances at the Southern Miss Invitational and the Morehouse Relays. The freshman from Neola, Iowa made a splash this past weekend at the Morehouse Relays with his medal-winning performances.
Bahrke made his collegiate debut at the Southern Miss Invitational by finishing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.98 meters and fourth in the discus with a throw of 45.07 meters. However, he did not walk away from the event empty handed as he won a silver medal in the hammer with a throw of 50.62 meters, the third-longest throw in Troy University history.
The following week at the Morehouse Relays, the freshman walked away with a trio of medals. Bahrke claimed a bronze medal in the shot put with a throw of 13.07 meters, followed by a gold medal winning performance in the discus. The freshman claimed the gold with a throw of 45.86 meters, before winning his third medal (fourth of the season) in the hammer with a throw of 48.13 meters on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Ja-Courteny Alexander was named Co-Female Track Athlete of the Meet this week by a vote of the conference media relations contacts for track and field.
The freshman entered the outdoor season after being named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year for the indoor season, and winning two medals in the process.
Alexander continued her dominating performance from the indoor season, capturing three individual gold medals in her first two outdoor meets this season. The freshman started the season by winning a gold medal in the 100-meters with a time of 12.14 seconds, and followed that up with a gold medal performance at the Morehouse Relays with a time of 12.11 seconds - a personal best in the outdoor season.
She followed those performances up with a time of 24.84, a personal-best, in the 200-meters at the Morehouse Relays. Along with capturing three individual medals, Alexander also claimed three relay gold medals and a relay silver medal in the first two weeks of the season - running her season total in two weeks to seven total medals. She ran a leg on gold medal winning teams in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 at Morehouse and a silver medal in the 4x400 at the Southern Miss Invitational.
The duo and the remainder of the Trojan track and field program travel to Tallahassee, Florida for the FSU Relays, hosted by Florida State University Thursday through Saturday.
