Troy hosts Florida Atlantic on Thursday night in the first Sun Belt game of the 2010-11 season for both teams. The game is the first league game played by any of the Sun Belt's 12 members.
Troy enters with a 1-7 record, having dropped seven-straight games, most recently a 80-73 defeat on Saturday at Miami (Ohio).
The Trojans led by nine with 5:40 left in the second half, but surrendered a 9-0 run that allowed the RedHawks to tie the game. MU closed out the final 3:26 with a 9-2 run to hand the Trojans another loss.
This season, the Trojans have been led by a trio of seniors. Guards Vernon Taylor (16.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Levan Patsatsia (11.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and center Bernard Toombs (10.8 ppg, 9.5 rpg) have led the charge during the first leg of the campaign.
Florida Atlantic (6-5) is coming off a narrow loss to Siena on Monday night, 72-69. The Owls are playing the final game of a three-game road trip that started last Saturday at Hofstra.
Back for FAU is senior big man and reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Brett Royster. The Arlington, Texas-native set a career high with seven blocked shots on Monday night and leads the Sun Belt with 35 blocks through 11 games.
Sophomore sharp-shooter Greg Gantt leads the team in scoring (14.8 ppg) and has hit a team-best 23 3-pointers. Fellow sophomore and Marshall transfer Korey White is scoring 9.5 ppg and grabbing 4.9 rpg – a total second only to Royster's 5.2 rpg.
Troy is 19-6 all-time against the Owls. The two squads split two games last season with each squad winning at home, including the Trojans emerging victorious 86-80 on February 20, 2010 behind 56 combined points from last year's senior trio of Richard Delk, Brandon Hazzard and Michael Vogler.
The Trojans are 1-4 all-time in Sun Belt openers. Their first victory came in the opener last season against New Orleans (78-76).
Tip-off for Thursday night's game is set for 7 pm in Sartain Hall. Barry McKnight will bring you all the action from courtside on the Troy Sports Network by IMG College. Coverage begins at 6:30 pm with the State Farm Pregame Show.
