TROY, Ala. – The Troy University women's basketball team returns to action Sunday afternoon, facing Florida Gulf Coast University inside Sartain Hall beginning at 2 pm.
It will be the second meeting between the two teams, as Florida Gulf Coast (6-0) defeated Troy 60-48 on their home floor back in November. The Eagles were able to extend their winning streak at Alico Arena, which is among the top five active streaks in the country.
Troy (2-6) enters the contest off a 75-39 victory over Belhaven (Miss.) University last Saturday afternoon, with three players in double figures. Junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) led the Trojans with 15 points, while junior Tenia Manuel (Leesburg, Fla./Leesburg HS) added 13 in the victory.
Senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) contributed her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, sophomore Sophie Kleeman (Newcastle, Australia/Newcastle HS) narrowly missed out on her first career double-double as she scored nine points and added nine rebounds. She also dished out five assists in the win.
In the first meeting between the two schools – which was the first meeting in the history of the two institutions – the Trojans were led by Sword with 17 points, as she was the only player in double figures for the Trojans. Meanwhile, Kelsey Jacobson led Florida Gulf Coast with 17 points on five three-pointers, while Courtney Chilhil added 10 points and nine rebounds.
So far on the season, McNair leads the Trojans at 14.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game; with her rebounding average leading the Sun Belt Conference. Sword is the only other active player in double figures, as she is averaging 13 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
The game will feature two of the best in the country in three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage defense. Florida Gulf Coast enters the game 62nd in the country in three-point field goal percentage at 35.2 percent; while Troy enters the game 40th in the country in three-point field goal percentage defense at 25.5 percent. In the first meeting between the two schools, the Trojans held Florida Gulf Coast to 27.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc, despite the five from Jacobson.
Sunday's game will be the last time the Trojans will play at home until January 2, when they face Florida Atlantic University in conference play on the Sun Belt Network.
The game can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM beginning at 1:45 pm with the pregame show; while live stats and live video are being provided as well. For ticket information, contact the Troy University Athletics Ticket Office at 1-877-878-WINS (9467).
