BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Troy University Trojans volleyball team fell to East Division co-leader WKU 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) Friday night in Sun Belt Conference action.
"We played pretty well tonight," head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "Our kids played well tonight, we made a couple of errors on the floor but I'm happy with the progress we've made. The girls that were out there on the floor have made progress this season. We will just keep pushing forward and be ready for Middle tomorrow."
Troy was led on the night by sophomore Devin Von Pingel with eight kills and a .158 attack percentage. Meanwhile, junior Natasha Kolunija recorded eight kills on the night for the Trojans.
In the first set, the Troy took an early lead on the Lady Toppers with a pair of kills from Kolunija and a pair of service aces, one from senior# Victoria Rogoschewsky and one from junior Laura Mackley#. However, WKU came back and tied Troy at 8-all, and from there the Lady Toppers were able to grab the momentum. Troy was able to come back with kills from Rogoschewsky and Mackley to tie the set at 10-10, from there the set was tied two more times before WKU eventually took the lead and the victory.
The Trojans and Lady Toppers started the second set being tied five times, before WKU was able to pull away with the lead after a 6-all tie. A group of Lady Topper errors, and kills from Von Pingel and freshman Alexandra Alexander pulled the Trojans to within one at 10-9. However, WKU was able to keep the lead over Troy, although kills from Alexander and Von Pingel once again got the Trojans close at 16-14, but those efforts fell short as WKU took the second set.
In the third set, WKU was able to take the early lead, but a kill by Kolunija and a group of Lady Topper errors tied the set at 8-all. The Lady Toppers were able to regain the lead, but kills from senior Megan Henderson and freshman Courtney Cohen brought Troy to within two at 13-11. WKU was able to hold on the lead and go on to take the victory.
Troy's next match will be on the road tomorrow night when they face the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee at 7 pm in Murfreesboro.
