TROY, Ala. – The Troy University Trojans will be looking to bounce back from a loss to fifth-ranked Xavier on Friday, returning home to face the preseason pick to win the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference, Western Kentucky University Wednesday night.
The game tips at 7 pm at Sartain Hall, and can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM with Buddy Johnson providing the play-by-play.
The first 100 students through the doors at Sartain Hall will receive a Cardinal Craze wristband.
The contest marks the earliest that the Trojans have opened conference play since joining the Sun Belt Conference; however, the contest was moved from its original date in late December to accommodate the Georgia State Tournament that the Trojans will be playing in December 28-29.
“We are looking forward to playing at home in front of our crowd,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. “We are excited to open up the conference season at home and against one of the premiere teams in the Sun Belt Conference, in WKU.”
Troy (1-5) will be playing their third home of the season, and will be opening a three-game home stand with the game on Wednesday night. They have split the two games at Sartain Hall, but in their last game inside the friendly confines, they were able to limit Birmingham-Southern to just 13 first half points and 35 total points – both school records for fewest points allowed by the Trojans.
This season, Troy is led by senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) who is averaging 14.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. Junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) is the only other Trojan in double figures as she is averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, junior Tenia Manuel (Leesburg, Fla./Leesburg HS) is averaging 8.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season.
WKU (0-5) enters the contest looking for their first victory of the season, albeit playing a tough schedule in the first five games of the season as they have faced Louisiana Tech, Duke, Michigan State and Central Florida all on the road.
The Lady Toppers are led by a pair of preseason picks on the first team All-Conference team in seniors Arnika Brown and Amy McNear. Brown is averaging 7.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while McNear has played in just one game after serving a three-game suspension and is averaging 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Janae Howard is the lone Lady Topper in doubles figures this season, as she is averaging 13.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game through the first five games.
WKU leads the all-time series 8-1 overall, including winning last year in Sartain Hall 63-56. However, the Trojans have split the last two games on their home floor as they won in 2009, 60-57. In three home games against the Lady Toppers, Troy has lost by a margin of just 3.3 points as the Lady Toppers hold a 2-1 advantage at Sartain Hall.
