Troy Falls To Denver On Road

The Trojans lost to the Pioneers in straight sets on Sunday afternoon

DENVER, Colo. - The Troy Trojans dropped their second match in three days out west, falling to the University of Denver 3-0 (12-25, 21-25, 21-25) Sunday afternoon.

Troy (10-16, 2-7 Sun Belt) was led on the afternoon by sophomore Devin Von Pingel with seven kills and a .190 attack percentage. Junior Brittany McClelland and sophomore Kayla Giles also added seven kills to the Trojan totals.

The Trojans took an early lead in the first set off a service ace from McClelland and consecutive kills from Von Pingel. However, Denver was able to tie Troy at 4-all, and took the lead from the Trojans. Kills from Giles and Von Pingel kept the Trojans in the set, but Denver (13-14, 7-5 Sun Belt) was able to pull away for the first set victory.

Troy fell behind early in the second set, but kills from senior Megan Henderson and senior Victoria Rogoschewsky got the Trojans to within one at 6-5, however, the Pioneers were able to keep thier lead over Troy for the entire set. Kills from Von Pingel, Giles and McClelland kept the Trojans in contention for the set, but the Pioneers were able to pull away for the 2-0 lead at intermission.

The Trojans once again took an early fall at the beginning of set three. After falling behind they were to able to come back, due to a host of Denver errors and kills from Von Pingel, Giles and junior Natasha Kolunija to close within 10-8. Denver was able to hold on to their lead, but kills from Rogoschewsky and McClelland tied the set at 13-all. A tie would be the closest Troy would get to taking the lead, at 14-all, Denver was able to pull away with the match victory.

Troy will be back in action on Friday October 29, when they face Florida Atlantic in Sartain Hall at 6 pm. The Trojans will be looking to end a five-match losing streak, and the homecoming court will be introduced on the night.
