TROY, Ala. - The Troy University softball program and head coach Melanie Davis have released the Trojans' 2010 schedule, highlighted by a spring break trip to Hawaii and games against eight different teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Trojans will travel to Honolulu to play a double header against the University of Hawaii on March 10. They will then participate in a tournament hosted by the Rainbow Wahine from March 12-14, including games against DePaul, Loyola Marymount and Hawaii.
"We strive to put together as competitive a schedule as possible," Davis said, "Going out west is a great tool to increase our strength of schedule. We called on our donors and supporters to make this trip possible, and we're very excited."
"We are excited about the memories our team will be able to make, but our goal is still to be able to perform and increase our RPI," Davis said.
The Trojans finished last season ranked 57 in the final RPI rankings.
The Trojans will open their season the weekend of February 12-13 by inviting Evansville and UT-Martin to the Trojan Softball Complex for the Troy Invitational.
"We enjoy the opportunity to host a tournament," Davis said, "It takes a lot of hard work, but it gives us a great chance to start the season off in front of the home crowd."
The Trojans will travel the following weekend to Orlando, Fla. to participate in a tournament hosted by the University of Central Florida, including a February 21 rematch against South Carolina who defeated the Trojans last season.
The Trojans will also participate in tournaments hosted by Samford (February 26-28) and Mississippi State (March 5-7).
Other non-conference games include a February 16 doubleheader at Florida State, an April 20 trip to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama, an April 27 doubleheader at UAB and a home doubleheader against Florida A&M on April 21.
The Trojans will open Sun Belt Conference play at home on March 2-3 when they welcome Middle Tennessee to town. The Trojans will also play home Sun Belt games against FIU, South Alabama, North Texas and UL-Lafayette.
The Trojans face road Sun Belt games against ULM, Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and South Alabama.
"As a whole, our schedule is strong because of the strength of the Sun Belt," Davis said. "The Sun Belt ranked as the seventh best conference last season, and if we continue to perform well, we'll be in a position for an automatic bid into the postseason, or an at large bid."
The Trojans will begin their search for that automatic bid on March 12 at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, which are being played in Mobile, Ala. this season.
