TROY ? Junior Kala Moore and sophomore Ashlyn Williams have been voted to the All-Region team as announced by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Thursday.
The honor is a first for both players, and adds to an already impressive list of accolades for each.
“I am extremely happy for both of these deserving young ladies. Both have worked extremely hard on the field and in the classroom and it is good to see them rewarded for the job they do for us day in and day out,” Troy head coach Melanie Davis said.
Moore was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District team on May 7. Earlier that week she had been voted to the All-Sun Belt Conference team.
The shortstop from Verbena, Ala. led all of the Sun Belt in stolen bases with 32 on the year. She ranked first on the Troy team at the plate with a .356 average.
“I'm very proud of Kala because she is excelling not only among the nation's elite on the field, but also in the class room. She is a math major, which is quite difficult, and for her to be able to maintain her GPA while dealing with the rigors of softball season speaks volumes to the hard work she puts in as a student-athlete,” Davis said.
Williams was once again one of the top pitchers in the league. She was named a first-team all-conference player for the second year in a row after posting a record of 25-13 for her sophomore campaign.
“Ashlyn faced many tough opponents this year and she deserves credit for being able to hold her form in those situations. Ashlyn worked hard on changing a few parts of her game and meshing with the new coaching that was implemented. We hope she will continue to improve and grow going into next season,” assistant coach Sharon O'Mara said.
The Hattiesburg, Miss. native also set Troy's single-season and all-time strikeout records with 312 and 615, respectively. For her Trojan career, Williams holds a record of 53-28 in two seasons.
“The strikeout record for the season that Williams set this year is a tremendous accomplishment because its something that gets increasingly more difficult to do each year due to the increasing talent-level and ability of hitters,” O'Mara said.
The duo becomes Troy's first all-region players since catcher Tamra Howren was selected in 2005. The teams are voted on by the member coaches of the NFCA.
