TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? The Troy Trojans went to Tuscaloosa searching for a season sweep of the homestanding Crimson Tide, but Alabama showed why they are the top home run hitting team in the country in a 22-4 game that was over almost before it started.
Alabama (21-10) hit four homers in the game, including two from senior Kent Matthes, who leads all of college baseball with 19 this year. He drove in a career-high seven runs in the game with a second inning grand slam, a sacrifice fly in the third and a two-run homer in the sixth.
The Crimson Tide got things started in the first inning off Troy starter Tim Wheeler (2-3), who surrendered a leadoff double to Taylor Dugas, but appeared ready to get out of the inning when he got an 0-2 count on Brandon May before walking the junior.
Junior Jake Smith followed with a towering grand slam, to get Alabama on the board. Clay Jones followed by hitting the next pitch from Wheeler over the wall in left as well.
From there, Troy used seven more pitchers as Alabama added six runs in the second inning, one in the third, and five each in the fifth and sixth innings.
Senior right-hander Casey Kebodeaux (2-0) earned the victory for Alabama with three innings of work in relief of starter David Head. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out three.
Troy hit two homers as well in the game, but both were of the solo variety and came in the second inning ? one by Brett Henry and the other by Chad Watson. The Trojans (18-11) had 12 hits in the game, but never seriously threatened Alabama.
Jones led Alabama's 19-hit attack with four while Ross Wilson added three and Dugas, Matthes, Smith and Cody Trotter had two each.
Michael Precise had three hits to lead Troy while Henry, Watson and Steven Felix had two each.
The Trojans will try to bounce back on Wednesday when they go back on the road for a game at Samford. The Bulldogs (11-20) will also be looking to bounce back after losing a 16-1 game at Jacksonville State on Tuesday.
The first pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field on the Samford campus is set for 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
