The Troy University baseball team played its annual fall exhibition against the Ontario Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field, sweeping a pair of seven-inning games from the under-18 travel team.
Troy won the opener 6-3 before wearing down the Blue Jays pitching in the second game, taking that one by a score of 20-2.
The Trojans used a four-run first inning against Ontario starting pitcher Evan Grills in the opening game after the Blue Jays touched Troy starter Tyler Ray for a run in the top of the inning.
Chad Watson hit the first pitch he saw from Grills for a home run over the monster in right, just left of the foul pole. The Trojans followed with four more consecutive hits, with a two-run double by Ryan Ditthardt and an RBI since from Chase Whitley plating the other three runs.
Troy added single runs in the fourth and fifth inning, both of the unearned variety. J.R. Myers reached on an error in the fourth, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a ground out. Ditthardt singled and eventually scored on a passed ball in the fifth for the final Troy run.
Ontario plated single runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings.
Cam Mattice led off the game with a double off Ray and scored later on a single by Phil Diedrick. Scott Wilcox led off the fourth with a double and scored from third later when Dan Franceshetti struck out, but had to be retired with a throw to first. Diedrick accounted for the final run with a solo homer off Dickinson in the seventh inning.
Troy got on the board with a pair of first inning runs in the second game and then, after Ontario tied it in the second inning, the Trojans put up big innings in each of their last four at bats.
Troy scored three in the third, fourth in the fourth and fifth and seven in the sixth. The Trojans totaled 21 hits in the game and got help from three Ontatio errors.
Steven Rosado was the star of game two with four hits, including three home runs, and six runs batted in. Every player in the Troy lineup had at least one hit in the game. Other homers came from Blake Martz and Adam Bryant, both of which came, along with the third from Rosado, in the seven-run sixth.
Drew Hull started the game on the mound for Troy and got the win. He allowed two runs on four hits over three innings. Chase Whitley and Nick Ward worked two shutout innings each for Troy.
Eric Wood was the losing pitcher for Ontario, allowing five runs on seven hits over three innings. J.D. Moore took the brunt of the Trojan attack, allowing 10 earn runs on 11 hits over two innings of work.
The Blue Jays managed just six hits in the second game, one of which was the second homer of the day for Diedrick.
The Trojans, who are in the middle of fall practice, open the 2010 season at home February 19-21 against Hofstra. Season tickets are available through the Troy University Athletics Ticket Office at 334-670-3681.
