NEW ORELANS, La. ? The Sun Belt Conference announced their top performers of the week today for Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field.
In women's field events Agata Cichoszewska of Troy made her first meet of the year a special one by winning top performer honors this week. Cichoszewska won a gold medal in the triple jump at the Blue Raider Invitational. The senior jumped a distance of 40'3” (12.26 meters) to easily outdistance the second-place competitor by five feet. The jump is the second-longest of the season in the Sun Belt Conference, and missed the NCAA automatic standard by 1.04 meters and the provisional standard by just 0.39 meters. She also finished fifth in the long jump competition with a jump of 17'7.25” (5.36 meters). The jump was just 0.74 meters from meeting the provisional standard.
In women's track Middle Tennessee's Nyeisha Wright was honored for her outstanding performances. Wright led the Lady Raiders at the Blue Raider Invitational winning two events and taking second in another. She ran a 24.63 in the 200 meters to win the event. This was the fastest 200 meters in the conference this season to date. Wright also won the long jump with a 18-7.00 leap and finished second in the 55 meters in 7.17 seconds.
In men's track Zac Edwards of South Alabama took home top honors. Edwards won the 3,000m run with a time of 8:26.02 at the LSU Purple Tiger Invite Friday in Baton Rouge, La., to earn his second consecutive win in just his second race as a Jaguar. He captured first place in the one mile run Fri., Jan. 16, at the McNeese Cowboy Indoor Invite I with a finishing time of 4:18.65.
In the field events Jordan Wehr took home top honors for the men. The North Texas junior had his most complete performance of his career by finishing second in the Heptathlon this past weekend in Arkansas. The Austin, Texas native set a school-record by compiling 5094 points, second only to Phillip Horn of Missouri Southern (5107). Wehr was first in the pole vault (16-02.75), fourth in the 1000-meter run (3:02.50) and 60-meter hurdles (8.56), fifth in the 60-meter dash, sixth in the high jump (6-02.25) and long jump (21-04.25) and seventh in the shot put (35-11.50).
Troy is off this weekend, but returns to action February 7 at the Tiger Indoor Invitational, hosted by the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
