Troy Hosts No. 16 ULL in Crucial Series

TROY ? Sitting just three games and half games out of first place the Troy Softball team hosts No. 16 Louisiana Lafayette for a three game Sun Belt Conference series Saturday and Sunday at the Troy Softball Complex.

The match-up pits the two longest winning streaks in the Sun Belt as Troy puts their six game stretch up against ULL's 16-game span of victories.

Last season Troy dropped 2-of-3 in Lafayette, and the Ragin' Cajuns hold a 7-2 all-time series advantage.

Troy (30-18, 12-6 SBC) enters the game on the heels of a crucial non-conference victory over in-state rival Auburn on Wednesday. The Trojans held Auburn to just four hits en route to a 3-0 victory.

The Troy coaching staff is excited to be hosting such a critical series and is glad to still be in contention for their first Sun Belt Conference championship after a poor beginning to the conference season.

“It's encouraging to think that we are still in the mix for a regular season championship even after our early series losses to Middle Tennessee and FIU put us behind the eight ball,” head coach Melanie Davis said.

“ULL is one of the hottest teams in the nation and this is a great opportunity for us to take the field against a high-quality opponent and see what this young team can accomplish.”

ULL (37-10, 15-2 SBC) features the reigning Sun Belt Conference player of the year in Holly Tankersley (.471 avg., 18 HR, 62 RBI's), but Troy will counter with a standout of their own in outfielder Heidi Johnson (.338 avg., 11 HR, 33 RBI's, 20 SB).

The series will also see a battle between the Sun Belt's two most dominant starting pitchers in Troy freshman Ashlyn Williams (25-11, 1.48 ERA) and the Ragin' Cajuns' Ashley Brignac (21-6, 1.41 ERA).

First pitch on Saturday is set for 1 pm with game two of the doubleheader starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

Sunday's contest will start at 1 pm with Senior Day Festivities preceding the game. Admission to all home softball games is free.

All three games of the series will be available via Troy Game Pass with all three games also being broadcast free via the internet and over the airwaves by WTBF 970 AM. Jerry Miller will bring you all the weekend's action.
