BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Troy put together a furious second half rally, outscoring UAB 41-39 in the second half including 19 in the second half for junior Brandon Hazzard but ultimately fell 73-68 at Bartow Arena on Saturday afternoon.
After hitting just 1-of-16 three point attempts in the first half, Troy hit 7-of-13 after the break to get back into the game. The Trojans had an eerily similar game to their first meeting with the Blazers, struggling for one half, but excelling in another. In the first meeting, Troy trailed by just two at halftime, but eventually fell big to the Blazers, 87-66.
UAB opened the second half with consecutive three's from Delaney and Channing Toney that sandwiched a Mike Vogler lay-up.
Toney hit another three and then a jumper in the lane to push UAB's lead to 14 points at 49-35 with less than 16 minutes remaining.
Brandon Hazzard connected on a pair of shots from deep to cut into the Blazers lead, then Huddleston followed up with his first deep bomb of the game to leave the deficit at 53-44 with around 13 minutes on the clock.
Hazzard found the bottom of the bucket again and then Vogler located a cutting Tom Jervis for a dunk to give the Trojans a quick five points with UAB leading 55-49 with 10:38 remaining.
The junior from Atlanta continued his second half surge with another three with 8:34 on the clock to cut the lead to just three points at 55-52. Vaden answered back with a three of his own on the next possession.
Vaden finished the game with 24 points and seven rebounds. Delaney scored 20 points with seven rebounds. Toney finished with 13 points and eight boards.
Mario Telfair split a pair of free throws and Richard Delk picked up his first two points of the game giving Troy just a two point deficit with 6:49 on the clock.
Hazzard hit his sixth three-pointer of the game to tie his career-high of 27 points set against Jacksonville University last season. He finished the game 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc, one off his career-high set in the same game.
Hazzard also played a career-high 36 minutes breaking his previous record of 32 set earlier this season against UNCW.
“The biggest thing for me was that when we got down I think we really played hard defensively to get ourselves back into the ball game. Brandon [Hazzard] hit some shots and when the lead was down to four I thought we had a chance to win,” head coach Don Maestri said.
The Trojans also out-rebounded the Blazers 43-39 with Jervis leading the way with nine boards. The loss was just the second time in two years that Troy had won the rebound battle, but lost the game. It also happened against Centenary earlier this season.
Troy opened up an early 4-0 lead with buckets by Michael Vogler and Regis Huddleston, forcing UAB head coach Mike Davis to call an early 30 second timeout less that four minutes into the game.
After hitting their first two shots, Troy went cold before Travis Lee hit three free throws to cut the lead to 16-10.
The Trojans would finally break the lid of the basket with a Mario Telfair put back at the 8:25 mark to cut the lead to 19-13.
Mike Davis, Jr. and Channing Toney added a three-pointer and put back lay-in on back-to-back possessions to push Troy's lead out to 11 points at 26-15 with 6:10 remaining.
Troy picked up a late lay-up from Antywan Jones to close out their first half scoring to enter the break trailing by seven points at 34-27.
Vaden hit a three, but a few seconds later Huddleston knocked down his second of the half to leave the UAB lead at three points. Another Vaden deep shot and a Delaney dunk gave the Blazers an eight point lead, but Hazzard hit another step back jumper in the lane for two dropping the lead to six.
With the UAB lead still at six, Vogler lost the ball on the way up in the lane forcing the Trojans to foul the Blazers and eventually putting Toney on the line for a bonus opportunity with 22 seconds remaining. The senior hit both to make it a three possession game.
Huddleston and Vogler each scored eight for Troy. Vogler finished with five assists and four rebounds.
The Trojans are in action next on Monday when they host the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington at Trojan Arena. Tip-off of the game is set for 7 pm.
