Troy vs. Southern Miss regular-season matchup
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Troy baseball team has been selected to participate in the 2007 NCAA Baseball Championship, the committee announced today. The third-seeded Trojans (34-25) will face No. 2 Southern Miss in the opening round at 3 p.m. on Friday.
Top-seeded Ole Miss and No. 4 Sam Houston State are the other two teams in the bracket, playing the 7 p.m. contest
Southern Miss and Troy are no strangers on the diamond as they met on Feb. 25 at the Wiregrass Classic in Dothan, with the Trojans winning 3-2. The teams also met last year in NCAA play in Tuscaloosa, with Troy sweeping both games to eliminate the Golden Eagles.
"We are obviously excited to move on to the NCAA Tournament," Head Coach Bobby Pierce said after his team watched the selection show together at Movie Gallery Stadium. "We are pleasantly surprised, but I appreciate the committee rewarding the schedule we put together. I am sure it was a big factor."
The Trojans finished in a three-way tie for second during the Sun Belt Conference regular-season, but lost two of three during the league tournament last weekend in Mobile. However, a league RPI of No. 6 and Troy's RPI near 30 throughout the year were the deciding factors.
The 2007 Championship marks the Trojans' fourth selection to postseason play since moving to Division I in 1994. In addition to last year, Troy also participated in 1995 and 1997 as members of the Mid-Continent Conference.
"This is a great opportunity to try to play our best baseball of the year this weekend," Pierce added. "We have been searching for that all year. Now we have the opportunity to prove that we belong."
