MOBILE, Ala.- Louisiana-Lafayette showed why they are the league champions as they came from behind for the second night in a row as they beat the Trojans 9-7 Thursday night at Stanky Field.
I hate it for this team,? assistant coach Mark Smartt said. Lafayette came back and did what good teams do, they found a way to win.?
Louisiana-Lafayette (42-14) wasted no time getting to starter Clegg Snipes as they scored three runs on five hits in the first inning.
Troy (34-24) cracked the goose egg in the bottom half of the second inning when junior Bryan Miller doubled and scored on an RBI single from freshman Shohei Fujita closing the ULL gap to 3-1.
The Trojan bats came to life in the bottom of the fifth inning when Fujita drew a lead-off walk and scored on an RBI double from senior Clint Robinson. Senior Josh Dew singled and Robinson scored on an RBI single by senior Kevin Weidlich. Sophomore Trevor Tyre singled scoring Dew. Miller singled scoring both runners giving the Trojans the 6-3 lead.
ULL didn't allow the Trojans to stay on top long as they scored five runs in their half of the sixth inning. After three consecutive singles, Jonathan Lucroy belted a ball over the wall in left for the grand slam and gave Lafayette the lead 8-6.
Josh has given us everything he's had over the past two years,? Smartt said. Their guy hit a good pitch and you have to give him credit.?
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Dew hit his eighth home run of the season.
Snipes got the start on the hill going five innings and did not factor in the decision. He went five innings allowing three runs on five hits. He walked one batter and struck out two. Freshman Tim Wheeler followed Snipes and tossed 1/3 of an inning after giving up three runs on three hits. Dew (7-2) took the tough loss throwing the final 3 2/3 innings giving up three runs on four hits including the grand slam. He struck out six Cajun batters and walked four.
Hunter Moody went 4 2/3 innings allowing six Trojan runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out four. Andrew Laughter (2-1) came on in relief and pitched very well. He gave up three hits and did not allow a run while walking one and striking out two to close out the game and get the win.
I told our team to get ready for two games tomorrow,? Smartt said. South Alabama will be ready and we will have to match what they bring to the table to move on.?
Craze, Miller, Dew, and Tyre each had two hits for the Trojans.
The Trojans will play in an elimination game against South Alabama Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
