The Crimson Tide beat Troy twice last season to capture the Tuscalosa Regional championship earning a birth in the Super Regional. The two met three times last season with Troy winning the first game with a score of 8-5 with Josh Dew homering and Ian Craze hitting a triple. The second game was in the regional that saw Troy and Alabama battle all the way to the bottom of the ninth when Emeel Salem scored the game-winning run to send the Trojans into the losers bracket of the tournament. Troy defeated Southern Mississippi to force a rematch with the Tide. Alabama eventually won the game and the regional. The Trojans are coming off a loss to nationally ranked Arkansas. The Trojans had difficulty on the weekend with their pitching staff. On Friday and Sunday the Trojans pitchers couldn't find the strike zone issuing 12 free rides on Sunday with walks and hitting batters. The staff hit 12 batters on the weekend. Sophomore Brett Henry made his first start at third base and showed why he belonged there. Henry batted .625 on the weekend. Henry went 2-for-3 on Friday, 2-for-3 on Saturday and 1-for-2 on Sunday. Henry also walked five times. Another bright spot was Senior Ian Craze. Craze also was a thorn in the Hogs side as they had trouble keeping him off the base path. Friday night, Craze went 4-for-5 with a walk and was 5-for-12 on the weekend with 3 walks and two stolen bases. It didn't take the two big hitters long to break into the home run column. Seniors Clint Robinson and Josh Dew both had home runs in the series and both were two-run homers. Senior pitchers Clegg Snipes and Joe Hallahan were perhaps the only two pitchers who had good outings. Snipes went 5.2 innings allowing only one run. He struck out seven and allowed only one walk but did not factor in the decision. Hallahan got off to a rough start giving up five runs in the first inning but settled into a rhythm after that going five innings giving up five hits while striking out four and walking two.
