Trojans Split With Panthers

TROY, Ala. - Sophomore Angela Lopez pitched a two hitter and recorded two hits as she lead the Trojans to a 3-0 win in game two over Birmingham Southern (25-14) on Tuesday night. Troy lost the first game of the doubleheader 3-1 in extra innings.
Lopez pitched seven innings giving up only two hits and notched ten strikeouts as she improved to 11-10 on the season. Offensively, Lopez went two for three and scored one of Troy's (27-35, 4-5 SBC) three runs.
Junior Amanda Ragans also performed well offensively as she went two for three with an RBI in the win. Junior Brittany Krbec went two for two with two RBIs at the plate.
Troy first put runs on the board in the fifth when Krbec doubled scoring Lopez and junior Angie Coteat from first and second, 2-0 Troy.
In the sixth Ragans singled bringing in sophomore Caurie Miller, who walked to reach base to extend the lead to three for Troy.
The Panthers' short stop Brooke Reed hit a solo home run on the first pitch of game one to get the lead early. Reed ended the game three for four with two RBIs and scored two runs.
Troy rebounded and tied in the fourth when freshman Felicia Hammer doubled scoring Miller who reached on an error by the left fielder.
Neither team was unable to score the necessary runs to break the tie which forced extra innings.
BSC started things off in the eighth when Reed singled scoring Kayla Backlund, who was placed on second in accordance with international tie-breaker rules. Then Nikki Rombough doubled brining in Reed from first to give the Panthers a two run lead.
Troy was unable to score any runs in the eighth to keep the game alive.
Freshman Heidi Johnson and Coteat each went two for four in the game to lead the Trojans who notched seven hits overall.
Junior Laine Harcourt took the loss in the circle for Troy as she went eight innings allowed six hits, three runs and two earned runs. Harcourt is now 14-18 this season.
The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday when they will play host to North Texas for its last home series of the season. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. and Sunday's game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
