OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Troy University softball team went into the University of Oklahoma tournament with high hopes but No. 10 Oklahoma and No. 19 Louisiana State proved to be too much for the Trojans.
Troy (11-8) lost to LSU (20-3) 8-0 on Sunday morning and then in extra innings lost 2-1 to Oklahoma (15-6-1) in the afternoon game.
I was pleased with the strong way we ended our play on Sunday taking No. 10 Oklahoma into extra innings,” head coach Melanie Davis said.
Oklahoma got on the board first as the Sooners scored a run in the first inning, 1-0.
In the sixth, Troy rebounded as junior Angie Coteat walked, then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Sophomore Jessica Lyle singled to right field bringing in Coteat and tying things up for the Trojans, 1-1.
The Trojans forced an extra inning but were unable to hang on as the Sooners scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
Defensively, Troy held Oklahoma to two runs unlike on Saturday when the game lasted only five innings and Oklahoma scored 13 runs.
Lyle went one for two with an RBI and defensively had eight putouts.
Freshman Felicia Hammer contributed against Oklahoma as she doubled and went one for two in the game. Troy also saw production at the plate from sophomore Caurie Miller and freshman Heidi Johnson, each had one hit in the game.
Sophomore Angela Lopez (5-3) notched the loss on the mound for Troy as she went seven point one innings allowing two runs, seven hits and one walk.
Against LSU, the Trojans were down early as the Tigers scored four in the first and two in the second inning. LSU also scored one run in the third and one in the fifth.
Troy had only four hits against the Tigers and left four runners on base. Lyle and Hammer each went two for two against LSU and had the only hits of the game for Troy.
