As the host team for the annual ScreenTech Wiregrass Baseball Classic, the Troy Trojans enter the 2006 tournament with perhaps more questions to answer than any other team in the field.

The Trojans will enter play on Friday against South Alabama having dropped four consecutive outings, the last three all by one run. The snap out of that skid, Troy will have to win against perhaps the best tournament field the Wiregrass Classic has hosted since its inception.

South Alabama (5-4) comes into the tournament as a battle-tested team. Already this year, the Jaguars have faced a number of top teams, including Wichita State, Oklahoma State, Arkansas and Southern Miss.

The Trojans and their new Sun Belt Conference foes will meet Friday night at 6 p.m.

In the opening game of the tournament, UAB (2-1), which opened the season with a three-game home series against Ball State, will face Michigan. The Wolverines, who posted a 42-19 record in 2005, will be opening their season against the Blazers.

The All-Time Series

The Trojans trail South Alabama 22-9 in the all-time series after splitting two games last year. Troy leads UAB 17-14 all-time and the Trojans will be facing Michigan for the first time in school history.

The Coaches

Troy - Bobby Pierce (Alabama, ?˜82) is in his fourth season at Troy and has an 103-74 record after guiding the Trojans to a 37-21 record a year ago. Pierce was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year and the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2005 after leading the Trojans to an A-Sun title. In his career as a head coach, Pierce has won 638 games in his career as a college head coach, including 259 at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College. His record at four-year schools stands at 379-180 and he is in his 11th season.

South Alabama - Steve Kittrell (South Alabama, 1971) is in his 24th season and has a career record of 901-509-1, including an 868-490-1 record in 23 years at USA.

Michigan - Rich Maloney (Western Michigan, 1986) is in his 11th season and has a career record of 362-216-1, including an 106-72 record in three years at Michigan.

UAB - Larry Giangrosso (UAB, 1975) is in his 28th season and has a career record of 733-473-1, including an 159-185 record in his 8th season at UAB.
