Trojans Take Home Top Honors From A-Sun

DeLAND, Fla. - Troy's Adam Godwin was named the 2005 A-Sun Player-of-the-Year on Tuesday as the Atlantic Sun Conference announced its 2005 Baseball All-Conference Honors. Fellow Trojan Brett Adcock earned A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Year honors, while Head Coach Bobby Pierce was named A-Sun Coach-of-the-Year.
Stetson's Chris Johnson earned A-Sun Freshman-of-the-Year honors after leading the A-Sun in batting average.
Godwin became the first Trojan to earn the A-Sun Baseball Player-of-the-Year award. It also marked the first time since 1996 that a student-athlete from a school other than the four A-Sun Florida schools earned the honor. The senior leads the nation with 81 stolen bases and is currently batting .371 with 64 runs scored and 41 RBI.
Adcock earned the A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Year award after going 11-2 this season with a 3.24 ERA. The senior struck out 97 in 108.1 innings pitched, while holding the opposition to a .236 batting average.
Troy Head Coach Bobby Pierce earned the Coach-of-the-Year award after leading the Trojans to a 36-19 record, including a 23-7 mark in A-Sun play. Pierce will lead top-seeded Troy into this week's A-Sun Tournament at Stetson's Melching Field.
Johnson became the third Hatter in five years to earn A-Sun Freshman-of-the-Year honors after leading the league with a .396 batting average. For the season, Johnson hit eight home runs while driving in 52 and scoring 59 runs.
A-Sun Regular Season Champion, Troy, earned its share of the honors as four Trojans earned first team accolades. Along with Godwin and Adcock, catcher Henry Gutierrez and DH Nick Smith also earned first team honors, while starting pitcher Landon Brazell and relief pitcher Tony Falls each earned second team honors.
Two other Trojans, pitchers Steven Morelock and Pete Van Horn, were named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team.
The Atlantic Sun Championship begins on Wednesday at Melching Field at Conrad Park in DeLand, Florida and will feature the league's top six teams based on conference regular season winning percentage. The first game of the tournament is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (ET) with top-seed Troy facing #6 Gardner-Webb.
Other first round games include #2 Florida Atlantic facing #5 Georgia State at 3:00 (ET) and #3 UCF squaring off against host #4 Stetson at 7:00 (ET). The A-Sun Championship Game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The 2005 A-Sun All-Conference awards are voted on by the league's 11 head coaches.
