vs. UAB (25-15, 10-8 C-USA)
Troy, Ala. • Riddle-Pace Field (2,000)
Coming off the high of a series victory over Florida Atlantic to maintain their one-game lead in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Troy Trojans are now forced to wait before continuing their quest for an A-Sun title.
But the Trojans will have their hands full while awaiting a visit from second place UCF the weekend of May 6-8. Prior to that series the Trojans will host intra-state rival UAB, travel to South Carolina to face Winthrop, a perennial NCAA Regional team, before returning to Riddle-Pace Field to host Auburn in a long-awaited, and once delayed, showdown.
First on the docket is the Blazers, who defeated Troy 5-3 back on March 8 at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham. It will be the first trip to Troy for UAB since the 1993 season, a game the Trojans won 10-7.
Since the first meeting this year, the Blazers have endured an up and down season. The win over Troy was the second in a 10-game win streak, but since the streak ended, the Blazers are 9-10. UAB is a solid 20-5 at home this year, but has just five wins in 15 road games. The Blazers won two of three from Cincinnati over the weekend, but had dropped three straight prior to the series, including a 10-7 loss at Samford.
After a short hitting slump that saw the Trojans lose two straight and score only six runs in three games, Troy got the bats going again in the final two games of the series at Florida Atlantic. In those two outings, the Trojans produced 34 runs on 44 hits with a .468 team batting average.
Troy will send freshman right-hander Ryan Ellison (1-2, 4.24) to the mound against the Blazers to face UAB right-hander Heath Tapscott (3-2, 4.89). Tapscott earned the victory in the first meeting, allowing one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Senior Adam Godwin leads the nation with 67 stolen bases this year, but had just one in the first meeting with UAB. He is coming off a career-best five RBI game on Sunday.
