Mick Hokanson is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Trojans. Hokanson was brought to Troy in 2010, bringing with him 18 seasons of coaching experience to Troy.
Last season, Hokanson helped the Trojans to a runner-up finish in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. He also helped the team at the plate as the hit .260 for the year and pounded out 28 homeruns throughout the season. The Trojans had four or more players finish the year with five or more homeruns, including Nikki Hollett, who was named to the Sun Belt All-Conference Team at the conclusion of the season.
The Trojans scored 188 runs, and connected for 80 extra-base hits on the season. They also walked 136 times on the season.
Hokanson spent the previous four years as an assistant at the University of Oregon. During those four seasons, he helped lead the team to a 119-111 overall record. At Oregon, he was the lead technical instructor for the infield and oversaw the Ducks’ base running, slappers and short game offense. Hokanson also served as a coordinator for recruiting, camps and clinics.
Before heading to Oregon, Hokanson was an assistant at UAB from 2001-2005. His primary responsibilities were offensive instruction and working with the Blazers’ infield, while also serving as the program’s out-of-state recruiting coordinator. In his first season at UAB, the Blazer offense improved its batting average from .232 to .265 and increased its number of doubles from 37 to 70. UAB also improved its home run total from 19 to 28 and hiked its RBI production from 142 to 209. The Blazers’ win-loss record jumped from 27-35 to 39-22, and the program had its best season to date and appeared in the Conference USA Championship game before losing to No. 16 DePaul, 2-1, in a nine-inning thriller.
Prior to his position with the Blazers, Hokanson started the softball program at Big Bend Community College and served as head coach from June 1998-July 2001. In 1999, Hokanson was honored as the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) East Region Co-Coach of the Year after posting a 21-19 overall record and a 16-10 conference mark in the team’s first season. Two seasons later, Hokanson received his second NWAACC East Region Coach of the Year award. In three seasons at Big Bend, Hokanson coached four National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NWAACC All-Americans.
Before his time at Big Bend CC, Hokanson spent seven seasons as an assistant at Western Oregon State College in Monmouth, Ore. During his time there, Western Oregon made two appearances in the NAIA regional tournament.
A native of Gresham, Ore., Hokanson received a bachelor of science in education from Western Oregon State College in 1994, and is also an active member of the NFCA. Hokanson was married to Emily Barnes on July 17, 2004. The couple welcomed their first son Aiden James (A.J.) on October 30, 2008.
Hokanson works with the Trojans’ hitters and serve as Troy’s recruiting coordinator.
“We are very fortunate to secure a coach with as much experience and success as Mick,” head coach Melanie Davis said, “He is exactly what we needed. He can recruit from coast-to-coast and that will really help us out.”
