Kaleb Canales is entering his first season with Troy as associate head coach.
Canales joins the Trojans after most recently serving as the head coach of the Calgary Surge in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. There, Canales led the Surge to the 20-8 record while advancing to the CEBL Championship Final.
"I am extremely excited to add Coach Canales to our basketball staff," said Cross. "I have known Coach Canales for 25+ years. We worked together at UT-Arlington, and we have already won a championship together."
The 2003-04 UT Arlington squad that Cross and Canales were both assistants on captured the Southland Conference regular season title.
Canales would leave UT-Arlington to take a position with the Portland Trailblazers, where he coached in various positions for nine seasons.
In 2012, Canales served as interim head coach of the Trail Blazers for 23 games.
Canales has also spent time as an assistant coach in various NBA organizations, including the Dallas Mavericks (2013-18), New York Knicks (2018-20), Indiana Pacers (2020-21), and Orlando Magic (2021-23).
"His resume is second to none," added Cross. "But what gets me even more fired up is his energy, enthusiasm, and passion for the game. He has a desire to help players become the best version of themselves. I have no doubt that he will help take Troy Trojan basketball to the next level!"
In 2023, Canales was hired as Associate Head Coach of the NBA G-League's Texas Legends, where he coached for two seasons before heading to Calgary.
Canales has been a consistent figure in the NBA's Basketball Without Borders campaign and has also served as Associate Head Coach of the Mexico Men's National Team since 2021.
He and his wife, Cristie, have a son, Bauer, and a daughter, Sloane.
