Troy University Athletics
Letter from the AD
Show Your Appreciation
Trojan Fans,
On April 16 we will celebrate and say thank you to a very special man and coach for his 20 outstanding years of service to Troy University and for his more than 40 years of service to young men across the state of Alabama.
Coach Larry Blakeney’s record speaks for itself.
He has coached almost 500 football games during his career which includes seven seasons as a high school coach, 14 as an assistant coach at Auburn and 20 seasons as the head coach at Troy University.
He is both the longest serving and most successful coach in Troy University history. His 161 wins at Troy are more than 100 more than his closest competitor.
He stands fourth among all college football coaches in the state of Alabama in career victories. Only Paul Bryant (223), Cleve Abbott (203) and Ralph Jordan (176) have more career wins than Blakeney.
He has guided Troy to 15 winning seasons, including six seasons with 10 or more wins.
He is one of only two coaches in history to guide a program from Division II, through the Football Championship Subdivision into the Football Bowl Subdivision.
He ranks fourth among all FBS coaches in tenure at his current school and he ranks 10th among all active coaches in career victories.
He is one of just six coaches to lead his program to at least a share of five consecutive conference titles. Only LaVell Edwards at BYU (10), Pete Carroll at USC (7) and Woody Hayes at Ohio State (6) have won more consecutive league titles than Blakeney.
He is a member of both the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
While we applaud his many accomplishments on the field, they are just a scratch at the surface of the number of boys he has helped to become successful young men.
The impact he has had, and continues to have, on the youth of this state will continue to pay dividends for generations to come.
I cannot express enough my appreciation for all that he has done for Troy University and for how lucky I am to have been his collegue and friend over the years. He has been, and always will be, the definition of “first class” and I thank him from the bottom of my heart.
Now is the time to honor and celebrate the man and his career. Make sure to get your tickets and attend the Larry Blakeney Roast on April 16 at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery. The event will be unlike any other and will be a night no one who attends will ever forget.
The evening will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by a dinner and roast at 6:30 p.m. The evening will be hosted by “Mr. College Football” Tony Barnhart.
Individual tickets are available for $50 each and reserved tables as well as sponsorship opportunities are still available.
Call 334-241-9502 or 334-670-3608 for information on tickets, tables or sponsorship opportunities. You can also e-mail blakeneyroast@troy.edu for more information.
