Social Networking
With the continuous development of technologies, it has become necessary to stretch the student-athlete code of conduct into other mediums. The use of Social Networking Websites is multiplying and bringing to surface new issues in regards to student-athletes. The idea of projecting a positive image of Student-Athletes, as well as the University which they represent, must be applied face-to-face and online alike. Student-Athletes must also be aware of possible online threats. Predatory individuals can obtain access to personal information and use these details to gain the Student-Athlete’s trust. These online predators include, but are not limited to, runners for agents, informants for bookmakers, individuals phishing for identity theft information, and even sexual predators. In order to uphold a positive image, as well as avoid possible threats, the Student-Athlete’s shall:
- Be mindful that online content is not private and that there could be long-term ramifications.
- Prohibit the use of personal information about yourself or fellow teammates (phone numbers, address, class schedule, etc.) for safety reasons.
- Make sure to consider your coach, teammates, members of opposing institutions and even future employers when posting comments online.
- Restrain from participating in or posting inappropriate photographs or other content. Never place a name identifying an individual in a photograph.
- Restrain from affiliating yourself with topics that are potentially offensive or degrading.
