Troy Honors Student-Athletes Academic Accomplishments
TROY, Ala. ? Troy University honored its student-athletes at its annual Student-Athlete Convocation on Monday afternoon. Troy administrators honored the student-athletes for their accomplishments on and off the field.
Two athletes, senior baseball player Kevin Weidlich and senior soccer player Laura Longard were honored for their academic achievements.
Weidlich was awarded the Clements Award which is presented to a male athlete who is at the top of his graduating class. Weidlich will graduate on May 11 with a degree in Social Science and Business with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Longard received the Sorrell Award which is presented to the female athlete who is at the top of her graduating class. Longard will receive her degree in Cell and Molecular Biology on May 11 with a 3.836 GPA. Longard plans on attending graduate school next year.
“We are very proud of our student-athletes. So many of our student-athletes know the main reason they are here is for their academic success,” Troy Athletics Director Steve Dennis said. “I am so proud of all those kids because it comes internally. They demand success on their fields of competition and on themselves to be successful in academics and understand that is really the main purpose they are here.”
In addition to honoring its top academic athletes, Troy also honored the academic accomplishments of its athletic teams. The women’s tennis team and men’s cross country team were awarded the Fred B. Davis award for having the highest team GPA.
The women’s tennis team has an overall GPA of 3.457. The women’s tennis team is followed by the soccer team with a 3.207 GPA and women’s cross country with a team GPA of 2.921.
The men’s cross country team has a team GPA of 3.077. The cross country team is followed by baseball with a team GPA of 2.828 and men’s golf with team GPA of 2.591. All team GPAs are from the 2006 spring and 2006 fall.
A total of 145 student-athletes were named to the 3.0 Club following the fall 2006 semester.
