Volleyball Concludes Florida Invite With Loss to Gators

TROY, Ala. — Troy volleyball falls to No. 10 Florida in three sets (20-25, 14-25, 16-25) in the Trojans' second and final match of the Florida Invite.
Troy (2-4) continued to ride the hot hand that is Isa Ruether. The first year outside hitter has continued to impress in her first collegiate season, as she posted another 10-kill performance on a season-high .500 (10/1/18) attack percentage. Another Trojan to hit the .500 attack percentage mark was Ashlynn Axtell, who posted seven kills of her own.
After a tight-knit opening frame, Florida (7-1) had the Trojans' number on offense. As a group, the Gators posted a hitting percentage of .489 (48/4/90). The Gators were fueled by Alec Rothe, who recorded a program-record .909 attack percentage with 10 kills.
Set 1 — Troy 20, Florida 25
Florida grabbed an early lead, though the Trojans would hang around for most of the set. Troy made it a 15-16 contest following the media break, but Florida was able to break away and take the first frame after winning four of the last five points. Kalina Calvillo and Ruether steadied the Trojan offense, with the duo recording an identical four kills on eight attacks with one error.
Set 2 — Troy 14, Florida 25
The second set got away from the Trojans quickly. After starting the frame down 3-0, the Trojans used their first timeout. Troy ultimately had to burn their second timeout down 7-1, following a Gator 4-0 run. The Trojans were never able to find their rhythm in the second as the Gators hit .441 as a team in the second.
Set 3 — Troy 16, Florida 25
Troy showed some spark early in the final frame and took an early 2-0 lead. The two teams went back-and-forth before the Gators used a small run to break open a 15-12 edge heading into the media break. Out of the break, the Gators tacked on four unanswered to force a Trojan timeout. It would not pay off for Troy, as the Gators secured the sweep.

I was really proud of our team's effort today, head coach Josh Lauer said. Florida is a top 10 team in the country — they're going to win a lot of matches. They're well coached and I thought that Troy went after it and played really aggressive. We did some things that are going to help us moving forward, not just this coming week, but into conference play.
