TROY, Ala. - Troy catcher Jimmy Janicki was named one of 48 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, the National College Baseball Writers Association announced Thursday.
The Dick Howser Trophy has been awarded to the top player in college baseball since 1987, based on two rounds of national voting by NCBWA members. The award is given in memory of the former Florida State All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987.Â
"Jimmy being named a semifinalist for National Player of the Year is an outstanding honor," head Coach Skylar Meade said. "We are so proud of him and what it means for the program. Jimmy is truly one of one as a person and player. This being our third player in the past four years is an incredible accomplishment for all Trojans!"
The Troy sophomore has been among the top producers in college baseball this season, slashing .352/.418/.690 while ranking eighth nationally in RBIs (69), ninth in doubles (21) and 17th in total bases (145) while leading the Sun Belt in home runs (16). Janicki is the only player in college baseball with at least 20 doubles, 15 home runs and 65 RBIs.Â
Earlier this season, Janicki was named to the Buster Posey National Catcher of the Year Award Midseason Watch List. He was also named the Sun Belt Player of the Week on March 17 and the Buster Posey National Catcher of the Week on April 21.Â
Troy closes the regular season with a three-game series at ULM Thursday through Saturday.
