HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Troy's offense exploded for three homers in Saturday's 8-2 win over Marshall to even the series.
Two of the Trojans' (21-22, 11-9 SBC) homers came off the bat of freshman Caden Reeves who launched a pair of two-run blasts in the fourth and eighth innings. The Thundering Herd (19-22, 10-10 SBC) scored their only two runs in the seventh on two-RBI double by Jackson Golden after Tommy Egan had carried a shutout through six.
Egan punched out six in 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits without a walk, which included him striking out the side in the second inning. In the third, Egan stranded runners on the corners with one out on a smooth double play shortstop Nolan Book. After Golden's double in the seventh, Zach Crotchfelt entered and retired all eight hitters he faced in the final 2.2 innings, striking out three.
Marshall starter Drew Harlow allowed five runs on five hits and four walks in five innings of work, striking out two. The Trojans put up three runs - all with two outs - in the first, starting with a solo homer from Blake Caviil. Jimmy Janicki singled, Steven Meier was hit by a pitch and Drew Nelson walked to load the bases, before a Nolan Book walk and a balk from Harlow brought home two runs.
Troy added another in the seventh off Alex Caudill with Cavill scoring on a wild pitch before Reeves' second homer of the ballgame off A.J. McAninch in the eighth.
Notables
Head Coach Skylar Meade on the win…
"I thought it was our cleanest, most efficient game. Methodical offensively. Certainly had some thump - Caden with the two home runs and Blake in the first. But we just grinded. Made their guy throw 41 in the first inning. Generally, if you make a guy grind, it's going to put a stamp on the beginning of the game."
Caden Reeves on his two homer day…
"I'm seeing it well. Keeping the routine simple. Trusting everything. Trusting the process. Taking advantage of my chances."
Zach Crotchfelt on closing out the win…
"It's just having a good self-belief. Believing that my stuff is better than anyone else's. Just extreme self-belief that I can get the job done. We put up a lot of runs today, so I just wanted to get the job done for the guys out there.
