TROY, Ala. - Following a dominant week on the mound and a productive week at the plate, Troy's Drew Nelson was named the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week.
The award honors the top two-way player in college baseball each week. Earlier this season, Nelson was named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List.
"Drew had a tremendous week and embodied what a true two-way player can do for the team," head coach Skylar Meade said. "He was on base all week, situational hitting, starting, and finishing the final two innings of this weekend's victory. Congratulations to him, and hopefully, there will be more accolades to come."
In two appearances on the mound last week, the Troy senior pitched five hitless innings, striking out six hitters to just one walk. At the plate, Nelson batted .267 across four starts with two walks, six RBIs and three runs scored.
The Troy native made his first career two-way start against Florida A&M on Wednesday, pitching three perfect innings with three strikeouts while contributing three RBIs at the plate, going 1-for-4 in a 12-2 win over the Rattlers.
Nelson got the ball in the 10th inning of Troy's rubber match victory at Texas State after playing the first nine innings in left field. He earned the win while pitching two hitless innings with three strikeouts and one walk as the Trojans topped the Bobcats 12-11 to win a crucial Sun Belt series.
He put the red-hot Bobcats down 1-2-3 with a strikeout in the bottom of the tenth before going back out in the 11th with a one-run lead, striking out two in a hitless frame while stranding the lone hitter he walked on the week on the game-ending groundout. Also in the series finale, Nelson went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
Nelson and the Trojans return to action at New Orleans at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Troy returns home to Riddle-Pace Field this weekend with a three-game series against Louisiana, Friday through Sunday.
