TROY, Ala. – Cobi Campbell erupted for 30 points on Wednesday night as Troy men's basketball handled Southern Miss, 91-65 inside Trojan Arena.
Campbell shot 11-of-16 from the field and 6-of-9 from three for one of the Trojans' signature performances of the season.
Troy (12-6, 5-1) displayed another impressive outing offensively, reaching the 90-point mark for the eighth time this season.
Victor Valdes played a large role in that effort, scoring 19 points and adding three assists. Valdes has scored 15-plus points in eight games this season.
The Trojans also played well on the defensive end of the floor, finishing with 14 steals on the night.
Southern Miss (11-8, 5-2) had four scorers in double figures, led by a double-double from Djahi Binet. Binet scored 10 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.
Both teams started slow offensively, as Southern Miss held an 8-7 advantage at the first media timeout and the game was tied 10-10 at the 10:30 mark.
That score was the result of a 2:56 stretch of scoreless basketball from both sides, with two free throws breaking the drought for the Golden Eagles. The Trojans did not score for another minute before a Theo Seng layup at the 9:28 mark.
The lid came off the basket for Troy soon after, as Austin Cross nailed a three and Valdes hit two deep balls on back-to-back possessions.
That spurt highlighted a 19-4 run for the Trojans, allowing them to build a 33-19 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first half.
To close the half, Cobi Campbell hit two of his six threes, and Troy took a 42-26 lead into the halftime break.
Southern Miss scored the first four points of the second half, capping of an eight-point scoring run, its highest of the game.
The Golden Eagles cut the lead to as little as 12, but Troy responded with nine quick points from Cobi Campbell and three free throws from Valdes to balloon the lead to 22.
That proved to be enough, as Troy claimed its largest lead of 28 in the closing moments of the game when Javen Colbert drove in for two.
The basket pushed Troy's shooting mark to 52.3 percent from the field, as the Trojans closed out the 91-65 victory.
Quotable – Head Coach Scott Cross
"Tonight was a great all-around win for our guys; we did a great job on the boards. Offensively we struggled in the beginning of the game and then Cobi [Campbell] started going. He was cooking tonight and kind of transcended the rest of the team. But it comes down to us being tough and physical, and I thought our guys had the right mindset from the get-go.
