TROY, Ala. – Following stellar spring seasons, Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis were named to the Women's Tennis Singles Second Team All-Conference, the Sun Belt announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Both players had exceptional single seasons for the Trojans and played a big role in helping the team reach double-digit wins for the fourth straight season. Avdeeva led the team with 15 wins, while Guirguis was right behind her with 12.
"I am so proud of Valeriia and Maria and what they accomplished this season. They led the team with very impressive play this season," head coach Rawia Elsisi said. "They performed at a high level all season and were the leaders of our team. They are so deserving of this honor, and I am thrilled that the coaches in our league recognized their exceptional play."
Avdeeva, a junior from St. Petersburg, Russia, recorded a team-best 15-2 record, while posting an 8-1 record in Sun Belt Play. She won eight of her last nine completed matches. She recorded impressive singles wins against Jade Marie of South Alabama, Ulyana Romanova of Old Dominion and many more. Fourteen of her 15 wins came in straight sets, including all eight of her Sun Belt victories.
Guirguis, a junior from Alexandria, Egypt, played at the No. 2 spot all season and finished the year with a 12-6 record, including 7-3 in Sun Belt play. Guirguis picked up wins over Southern Miss, James Madison, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Arkansas State, ULM and Louisiana. She finished the season by winning seven of her final 10 matches. All her conference wins came in straight sets and in those wins, her opponent never won more than four games in a set.
The duo will be back in action on Thursday afternoon as Troy takes on Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Rome Tennis Complex in Rome, Ga. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available at TroyTrojans.com.
