NEW ORLEANS, La. – Outside hitter Amiah Butler and setter Madison Marx both earned Sun Belt weekly awards for their performances against Southern Miss this past weekend, the conference announced Tuesday.
Troy needed to win both matches to secure its spot in the Sun Belt Tournament, which begins next Thursday, Nov. 20, in Foley, Ala. In two thrilling five-set matches, the Trojans did just that to earn the No. 4 seed in the West Division.
Butler collected the second Offensive Player of the Week award of her career and first this season. The Preseason All-Sun Belt selection has been a force all year, but was especially excellent this past weekend.
Butler finished the weekend with 57 kills across the two matches — the most in the Sun Belt this weekend. Her 32-kill performance on Saturday was a career high and the third-most in a single match within the conference this season.
"Amiah had a First Team All-Conference weekend," head coach Josh Lauer said. "She set the tone of our entire team offensively both nights and had one of the best weekend performances in the history of Troy volleyball. It was fun to watch her shine and help the team earn our spot in the SBC Tournament."
Additionally, the 32 kills were the fourth-most in Troy history for a single match. Butler accomplished the feat efficiently, hitting .375 while adding 14 digs.
For Marx, it is the first weekly honor of the freshman's career. The Franklin, Wis., native directed the Trojans' offense with 58 assists over the weekend.
Marx added 24 digs, notching double-doubles in both matches. Saturday marked Marx's third straight double-double, a feat she has accomplished in six of her last nine matches.
So far this season, Marx has totaled 408 assists and 23 aces in her impressive debut campaign.
"Madison played really well in three phases over the weekend," said Lauer. She was consistent setting, played excellent defense and had clutch serving runs for us at crucial times, Our young talent at the setting position is really fun and exciting, and I am thankful the Sun Belt coaches recognized Madison's contribution to our team's success this past weekend."
Marx is just the second true freshman to earn a Sun Belt weekly award this season.
Troy travels to App State for matches this Friday and Saturday to conclude the regular season. The Trojans will open play in the Sun Belt Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 20.
