Troy Set to Hold Annual Bench out Breast Cancer Event Wednesday

TROY, Ala. – The 11th annual Bench out Breast Cancer event, organized by the Troy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in the first floor football tower weight room.
"It's a super worthy cause," said Director of Strength and Conditioning Richard Shaughnessy. "For me, anything I can do to help with raising money is worth it, because I know what it's like to go through that type of loss and battle."
The event raises thousands of dollars every year for cancer research as students and community compete in a bench press competition. There will be prizes for the top male and female lifters, including a free oil change from Jim Whaley and Troy football memorabilia.
"The event has been a great thing in past years, and it keeps growing," Shaughnessy said. "From an impact standpoint, I think people are more aware than they've ever been about cancer and cancer research."
Also available for participants is a raffle including items from many local businesses.
Entry to attend the event is free. It's $5 for students to compete and $10 for non-students to compete, with proceeds going directly towards the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
