TROY, Ala. – In a battle of the defenses, Troy came up just short in its Sun Belt opener as ULM scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to win, 13-9, on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
ULM (3-1, 1-0 SBC) took the lead with 9:08 left in the game on a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Ahmad Henry to go ahead 13-9. Troy (1-4, 0-1 SBC) couldn't get anything going on offense after that, generating just five yards on seven plays in its final two drives.
Troy starting quarterback Goose Crowder left the game with an injury in the second quarter and did not return. He completed one pass for 14 yards. Tucker Kilcrease took over and was 6-10 for 57 yards. He also had 55 yards on the ground.
All nine of the Trojans' points came courtesy of Scott Taylor Renfroe's leg, as he knocked in three of his four field goal attempts, including one from 49 yards, which is a new career high.
Gerald Green led the Troy rushing attack with a team-high 102 yards. It marked the first 100-plus yard game as a Trojan and the fifth of his career. Damien Taylor also added 71 yards on the ground. Troy finished the night with 272 total yards, including 201 on the ground and 71 through the air.
On defense, the Trojans held ULM to 247 yards. In the passing game, Troy allowed 135 yards on six attempts while giving up 112 yards on the ground. ULM averaged only 2.9 yards per carry.
Renfroe got Troy on the board first on a 37-yard field goal on the opening drive of the game. The Warhawks tied things up on a Max Larson 42-yard field goal – which also came on its opening possession. Those were the only points the Troy defense surrendered in the first half, as it held ULM to just 99 yards of total offense in the first half.
Justin Powe came away with Troy's first turnover of the season as he picked off General Booty with 4:44 left in the second quarter. The interception was the first of Powe's career. Troy entered the weekend as one of just two teams (Purdue) without a forced turnover this season.
Going into the break, Troy led 6-3 after Renfroe knocked in his second field goal of the night, this time from 49 yards with 57 seconds remaining in the half.
ULM leveled things up in the third quarter with 4:07 left on a 20-yard field goal from Larson. Troy jumped ahead early in the fourth quarter after Renfroe booted in his third field goal of the night, this time from 36 yards.
The Warhawks scored the game-winning touchdown on its very next drive.
Troy hosts Texas State on Thursday at The Vet; kickoff is set for 6 p.m. for the nationally-televised game.
