TROY, Ala. – This offseason, offensive coordinator Sean Reagan and head coach Gerad Parker had the daunting task of finding their starting quarterback after the departure of Gunnar Watson. Troy's quarterback room is deep; however, they lack on-field experience. The five quarterbacks on the roster only have a combined 21 passing attempts at the Division I FBS level.
Goose Crowder, a redshirt junior from Gardendale, Alabama, was recently named the starting quarterback for this upcoming season. Crowder served as the backup to Watson in 2023 after transferring from West Virginia. Crowder appeared in three games for the Trojans last season, completing nine of his 13 passing attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Matthew Caldwell, a junior from Auburn, Alabama, is a player to watch as fall camp continues. Caldwell is transferring to Troy after two seasons with Gardner-Webb. Caldwell started nine games over three years at the FCS level, where he threw for 1,450 yards and eight touchdowns. He is the only other quarterback on the Trojans' roster to appear in a game at the collegiate level.
Tucker Kilcrease, Caleb McCreary and Montana Wells round out Troy's quarterback room.
Kilcrease, a redshirt sophomore, enters his third season as a Trojan. The Brantley, Alabama, native has spent the last two seasons developing as Troy's third-string quarterback. McCreary, a true freshman, comes to Troy after a decorated high school career. The Wetumpka, Alabama, native was a three-time all-state selection and led Montgomery Catholic Prep to a perfect 15-0 state championship-winning season his senior year. McCreary finished his high school career with 9,549 passing yards and 125 passing touchdowns and added 2,607 yards on the ground with 39 rushing touchdowns. Wells, a redshirt freshman from Magnolia, Texas, transferred in after a season at Houston Christian, where he saw no playing time.
