TROY, Ala. – Kole Myers hit three home runs, and Will Butcher drove in nine runs and belted four doubles as Troy split a doubleheader against SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field.
Troy (2-1) won the opener, 24-13, in seven innings behind Butcher's nine RBIs, while the Cougars (1-2) took advantage of a five-run third to win the nightcap, 7-6.
The teams wrap up the four-game series Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
Game One – Troy 24, SIU-E 13
Butcher exploded for three doubles and nine RBIs as Troy defeated SIU-Edwardsville, 24-13, in a shootout in the opener, which was shortened to seven innings due to the run rule. Butcher's nine runs driven in were one off the Troy single-game record and the most by a Trojan hitter since Edgar Ramirez drove in nine in 2006 against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Troy scored three or more runs in all six innings it came to the plate, including a six-spot in the first and four in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Butcher and Shane Lewis each finished with four hits to lead Troy's 19-hit attack, while Ethan Kavanagh and Lewis drove in three runs as the Trojans exploded for their most runs since scoring 26 against Bethune-Cookman in 2012.
Myers added three hits from his leadoff spot in the lineup, including drawing a pair of walks against a SIU-E pitching staff that issued nine free passes, hit three batters and threw four wild pitches in the game.
Troy belted seven doubles as a team, and Lewis finished a triple shy of the cycle after crushing his first home run of the season 415 feet down the line in right field.
Logan Ross (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Trojans after allowing three runs – one earned – in four innings of work. He struck out the side in the first and finished with four strikeouts and a walk.
Ryan Niedzwiedz led the Cougars, going 4-for-4 from the plate with a pair of RBIs, while Zack Floyd and John Stallcup hit their first home runs of the season. Alex Rodriguez (0-1) took the loss for SIUE after allowing six runs in a third of an inning.
Game Two – SIU-E 7, Troy 6
Myers hit three home runs, but it was not enough as SIU-Edwardsville took advantage of a five-run third inning and three unearned runs to win game two of Saturday's doubleheader by a 7-6 margin.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning after a pair of walks and an infield single by Kyle Mock. Mikey Bello smoked a ball into center field at almost 100 miles-per-hour off the bat, but the Cougars were positioned perfectly to record the final out of the game.
Myers led off the home half of the first with a 341-foot blast to right, Butcher added his fourth double of the day, and Tremayne Cobb Jr followed with a triple to plate Butcher before scoring on a wild pitch to give Troy a 3-1 advantage after an inning of play.
The Cougars opened the third with a pair of singles and a walk before a 2-run single by Ethan Willoughby and an RBI double from Floyd. Jay Dill got the next batter to strike out, but a Troy throwing error extended the inning and allowed two more runs to score.
Myers hit a solo shot in the sixth and again in the eighth after Mock doubled and scored on a wild pitch.
Dill (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Troy after allowing seven runs, four earned, on 10 hits over three innings of work. Luke Lyon closed out the game for the Trojans with six hitless innings, with seven strikeouts.
Kyle Athmer (1-0) earned the win for SIU-E with five innings of five-hit, three-run ball out of the bullpen.
Quotable – Head Coach Skylar Meade
"I would love to see us play better baseball. You look at the first game, and obviously a lot of runs, but you also see a lot of runs given up on our end. You look at the reality, we self-induced all of it, and we certainly did that in the second one too. Ugly baseball in the first innings, as we told the guys, ugly baseball is going to end up giving you the L."
